Summer Festivals
Perhaps the most ironic thing here about summer festivals is that word summer. Sometimes the festivals are indeed enjoyed in the sun, but for what seems a majority of the time, the word summer does not seem appropriate due to the heavy rain and damp conditions. English festivals such as V festival, Leeds, Reading and T in the Park regularly sell out and predominantly due to the students. Even though these events can cost up to £250 just for the ticket, a four to five day camping experience in the UK can arise to around £500 once travel and of course beer has been accounted for.
Music festivals are a very sociable way to enjoy part of a summer holiday. As mentioned earlier, it does often rain, but there are of course some days where the sun is shining and everyone is enjoying themselves, often with a rather tepid beer in hand. Of course at festivals there are some big name bands that everyone wants to see and will queue for hours in order to get to the front to see their idols up close. However, queuing at one stage for a whole day often means that people have to stick around listening to bands they perhaps have never heard of. This is then where the other significant feature of festivals comes in, alcohol.
Alcohol and drugs seems a big part of festivals, obviously it is not a compulsory way to spend the festival, but as students crave to fully enjoy themselves, some feel the need to experiment in an environment where almost everyone is doing it. There are obviously however, smaller scale local day festivals where this is not the case though and these are more for the whole family to enjoy together.
